Iowa State Fairgrounds
by DAVID WILKINSON
Over 150 cars crowded into the pits for the regular Friday night program at
the Iowa State Fairgrounds Speedway. The winners were Darrell DeFrance (IMCA
late models), Larry Pinegar (sprint cars), John Logue (IMCA modifieds), Steve
Jackson (IMCA stock cars), Bill Bonnett and Steve Curtis (IMCA hobby stocks)
It was all Darrell DeFrance in the IMCA late model feature. He used his
front row start to advantage as he bolted into a lead he never relinquished.
Craig Jacobs moved from his fourth row start to second, but was not able to
catch DeFrance. Finishing third was Ron Cochran with Billy Allen fourth.
Larry Pinegar shot into the lead and led all 18-laps of the sprint car
feature. Finishing behind him were Tim St. Arnold, Doran Doty, and Jerry
Crabb.
In the IMCA modified feature, John Hunnell, the early leader with Tim
Folkerts right behind him, pulled away from the field. However, a caution
flag on lap six bunched up the field. On the restart, Folkerts took the
lead and John Logue passed him one lap later. Logue maintained first to the
checkered. He was chased by Bill Davis Jr. who finished second, with Hunnell
third, and Danny Wallace, fourth. After the race, Randy Killen claimed
Logue's engine.
In the IMCA stock car feature, Richard Dearth took the early lead, but was
passed by David Cirksena on lap three. Steve Jackson closed the gap and had
passed both of the leaders by lap six. Jackson found a smooth groove and won
easily. Hunnell finished second, Brian Edel was third, and Cirksena fourth.
In the first IMCA hobby stock feature, Bill Bonnett took command at the
halfway point and held off John Watson for the victory. Jim Alexander
finished third, but was disqualified. The official order of finish was
Bonnett, Watson, James Turner, and James May. Steve Curtis dominated the
second hobby stock feature and was followed to the checkered by John Davis,
Larry Embrey, and Rick Gladsen.
Racing in all classes continues next Friday with hot laps at 6:15 and racing
at 7:00 P.M.
