Iowa State Fair: Killen and Killen
by DAVID WILKINSON
Des Moines, Iowa -- Brothers Tom Killen and Don Killen won the features for
IMCA modifieds and IMCA stock cars Friday at the Iowa State Fair Speedway.
In IMCA hobby stock features, John Davis won for the third week in a row and
Steve Curtis won for the fourth time this season.
In the IMCA modified feature, Tom Killen jumped from the second row to the
front and immediately opened a big lead. He was able to keep the lead
despite three caution flags. On the last lap, Kendall Sather regained second
by passing Danny Wallace. Dave Farren Sr. was fourth. After the race, the
engine of Kendall Sather was claimed by another driver.
Don Killen made a bold move at the start of the IMCA stock car feature to
move from inside the fourth row to first on the first lap. He enlarged his
lead making the race for second interesting. For much of the race, Brian
Edel chased Killen, but on the white flag lap, Todd Inman passed Edel for
second. Steve Jackson finished fourth.
In the first IMCA hobby stock main, Mike Stark led all of the laps except the
first and the last. Jim May led the first lap and Steve Curtis worked
through the field, passed Stark after the white flag was displayed, and took
the checkered first. Donnie Grow finished second, Jim May third, and Stark
was fourth.
John Watson took the early lead in the second hobby stock feature. On lap
five, John Davis moved by him into the lead for the victory. Mark Chance
finished second, John Gilbert was third, and Leland Mitchell was fourth.
Season championships will be held for IMCA modifieds, stock cars, and hobby
stocks on Thursday, September 2 with hot laps at 6:15 and racing at 7:00 P.M.
