Delayed Iowa Fairgrounds Races to Wallace, Houseman and Nevins
by DAVID WILKINSON
After three weeks, drivers finally had the chance to compete for the Jocko's
Auto Parts trophies as the features delayed from April 9 were run.
In the 360 sprints, Mike Houseman took the lead from outside the front row
and was able to hold off a late challenge from Larry Ball Jr. to win the
first trophy and feature of the night. Roger Short finished third and Jerry
Crabb fourth.
In the IMCA modified feature, Danny Wallace took advantage of car troubles
facing Dave Farren Sr. Farren was scheduled to start on the pole, but his
car had problems during hot laps and he never returned to the track. Wallace
replaced him on the pole and led all 15 laps of the feature. Mark Allgood
finished second with Tim Folkerts third and Russ Gladson fourth.
It looked like Steve Jackson would win the IMCA stock car feature from the
pole. He moved into an early lead that he widen over a pack of drivers. In
the closing laps, Bryan Nevins and Maynard Davis closed on Jackson with both
passing him on the last lap. Nevins won with Davis second, Jackson third, and
David Cirksena fourth.
In the first IMCA hobby stock feature, Dan Hanselman led wire-to-wire for the
victory followed by Bill Bonnett, Don Wear, and John Yaw Sr. In the second
feature, John Gilbert led the first half of the race. Mike Stark overtook
Gilbert until Jim Alexander passed the both of them on the white flag lap and
took the checkered. Gilbert finished second, John Davis third, and John
Pierick fourth.
