Iowa State Fair Speedway Midseason Champions

Jacobs, Sather, Killen, Moyer

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (June 22, 2001) The opening race Friday night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway reminded gamblers of a big win on a slot machine. A hobby stock race delayed by rain the previous week was run first and the three "sevens" of John Thoren (7T), Eric Stanton (7B), and Ryan Lundy (7X) finished one, two, three.

As part of the special mid-season championship night, drivers from the first, and in some cases the second row, could decide to move to the back of the lineup with the opportunity to win double the prize money if they could then finish first. Several tried, no one succeeded.

In the IMCA late model feature, Chris Smyser gave up his second row starting position to try for the extra money and five laps were added to the regular length of the race to make it 23-lap feature. Todd Cooney vaulted into the lead at the start in this race that was run from green to checkered without a caution. Craig Jacobs chased Cooney and passed him on the 18th lap and reached then finish first. Cooney finished second ahead of Darrell DeFrance and Ron Cochran. Smyser started 19th and finished sixth.

Kendall Sather, the current points leader, led the IMCA modified wire-to-wire. Dave Farren chased him and settled for second ahead of Rod Scheuermann and Bill Davis Sr.

In the IMCA stock car feature, Steve Jackson gave up his second row starting position to try for the win from behind. At the drop of the green, Jeff Anderson moved into first and led until Don Killen passed him at the halfway point of the race. At the same time, Jackson who started 24th was in fifth and left the race with a flat tire. After a few laps, Killen pulled away and Anderson left the race with a flat. The finishing order was Killen, Brandon Hess, Greg Shepherd, and Danny Hill.

The KARL Chevrolet NDTR dirt truck main started with Jeff Johnson choosing to start from the back rather than row two. Brett Moyer started the race in the lead and finished it in the lead, but Sean Allen led the middle of the 20-lap feature. The finishing order was Moyer, Rick Warden, Rod Sorter, and Jim Torner. Johnson had moved into third place and then left the race on lap 14 as his engine was overheating.

No IMCA hobby stock driver in the three features decided to start in the rear. The first feature was extremely competitive as Bill Bonnett jumped into the lead from the pole. By the second lap, Richie Gustin who started in the fourth row moved into second and started at the leader. Gustin passed Bonnett on the fifth lap and the two raced together for the remainder of the race. On the last lap, coming off of turn four, Bonnett and Gustin raced side-by-side to the checkered with Bonnett winning by ˝ of a bumper in a dramatic finish.

Craig Roberts led the entire 2nd hobby stock feature and was followed to the finish by Don Wear, Bill Dawson, and John Thompson. Dawson’s car was fast as he started in the 11th position, passed 18 cars during the race, yet finished third. He was penalized 8 spots for jumping at the start of the race and two more places for jumping a restart.

Rick Gladson passed Keith Williamson and won the last hobby stock race of the night. Darcy Hoch finished second with Gene Behle third and Melissa Johnson fourth.

Cliff Barber won a special feature for dwarf cars.

Racing continues next Friday with the line-up of IMCA late models, modifieds, stock cars, and hobby stocks, along with NDTR dirt trucks. Hot laps begin at 6:00 pm and will be followed by racing.
