(Des Moines, Iowa) (June 16, 2001) The evening got under way under sunny skys but ended with a light shower that postponed the final Hobby Stock feature for one week.

Kyle Leonard grabbed the Karl Chevrolet Dirt Truck feature and threatened to sweep the evening with an earlier heat win and the feature win.  At the half way point Jeff Johnson of Indianola moved into the second spot and a lap later captured the lead.  Knoxville’s Mark Fee moved into the second spot on lap 9 and challenged Johnson a couple of times before settling for second.

Veteran Des Moines driver Bill Davis Sr. grabbed an early lead in the I.M.C.A. Modified feature to pick up his first feature win of the season.  The field closed with a yellow on lap seven but Davis picked up where he left off with an ever-growing lead and the eventual feature win.

In the closest race of the evening Chris Smyser, Lancaster, Mo., was able to get by Craig Jacabs, Des Moines, at the checkered flag, to take the Late Model feature.  Todd Johnson, W.D.M., who won a heat earlier, garnered the early lead but gave it up to Jacobs on lap 5.  A lap 11 yellow flag diminished Jacob’s half straightaway lead allowing Smyser to close in for the challenge.  Smyser ran along side out of the turns in the remaining laps and made an outside pass at the checkered for the win by just inches.

The Stock Car feature provided a three way battle for the lead with the lead changing almost each lap.  Maynard Davis, D.M., grabbed the lead and fought off two former National Champions in the way of Steve Jackson, D.M. and Jeff Anderson, Atlantic.  At the end it was Jeff Anderson picking up his forth feature win as Jackson cut a tire and Davis had trouble in turn two dropping them both out of the hunt for the win.

The first Hobby Stock feature went to Bill Bonnett, Knoxville, after passing the defending track champion Rick Gladson, D.M., on the last lap.  Bonnett picked up his 4th feature win of the season at the historic dirt track.  The second Hobby Stock feature went to Rusty Groves of Des Moines.  Groves led the entire way as the races went without a yellow.  The final Hobby Stock feature had just begun when a light rain shower passed over and halted the racing for the evening.

Next week will be Mid-Season Championships in all classes.  The MADCRA Dwarf Cars will also be on the racing program.  The evening will begin with the Hobby Stock feature that was rained out, followed by Dirt Truck heats and Dwarf Car Heats.  Mid-Season Championship features will follow the heats.
