(Des Moines, Iowa) (July 27, 2001) Season Championships were held Friday night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway and Denny Stoneburner took the IMCA modified feature and edged out Rod Scheurermann for the modified season title. Darrell DeFrance captured the IMCA late model feature and Jeff Anderson won the IMCA stock car main for the sixth time this season. IMCA hobby stock features went to Rick Gladson, Adam Hagen, and Keith Williamson with the Karl Chevrolet NDTR truck main to Mark Fee and the dwarf car race to Bob Helm.

In the IMCA modified championship race, point leader Rod Scheurermann needed to finish in the top five to win the season championship. As the points leader, he started on the pole and was running in third behind Denny Stoneburner and Danny Wallace for the first 11 laps of the 15-lap race. On lap 12, Kendall Sather passed him for third and then tire problems took him out of contention and he finished tenth. Stoneburner, who was second in points, won both the race and modified championship. Wallace finished the race second, Sather third, and Bill Davis Jr. was fourth.

Darrell DeFrance took the lead in the IMCA late model feature from his starting place on the outside of the front row and led every lap of the race finishing just ahead of Chris Smyser. Randy Faux finished a distant third and Todd Cooney was fourth. Cooney’s top four finish cinched the late model season championship.

Don Killen was the only points leader of the night that was assured the points championship, just as long as he started his IMCA stock car in the main. When promoter Mick Trier offered the top four point leaders the chance to move his car to the rear of the pack and race for double winnings if he won, Steve Jackson was only driver to accept the challenge. Jackson put on quite a show moving from 22nd to finish a distant second behind Jeff Anderson. Killen ran a solid third and Dave Mongar was fourth.

In the Karl Chevrolet NDTR truck division, Mark Fee led the entire race to claim his fourth victory of the season. Jeff Johnson finished second with Brett Moyer third and Rick Warden fourth. Brett Moyer won the point championships for the season.

Rick Gladson won the first IMCA hobby stock feature finishing ahead of season champion Bill Bonnett, Don Wear, and Larry Embrey. After the race, John Nelson claimed Embrey’s engine. Embrey refused to sell and was disqualified giving fourth place to Bill Dawson. In the second hobby feature, Steve Roberts led from his pole starting position until passed by on the white flag lap by the eventual winner Adam Hagen. Roberts finished second, Joey Jones third, and Jeff Hovick fourth. After the race, Danny Watson claimed Robert’s engine. In the final hobby main, Keith Williamson passed Jeff Featherstone coming out of turn four on the third lap beat Featherstone, Eric Stanton, and Jason Murray to the finish. After the race, Curt Reed claimed Williamson’s engine.

The dwarf cars made their fourth appearance of the season with Bob Helm capturing the victory followed by Todd Shute, David Rafferty, and Randy Bryan.

Racing continues on August 11th and August 14th as part of the Iowa State Fair. On the morning of Saturday, August 11, an unsanctioned event for modifieds, stock cars, hobby stocks and dirt trucks starts with hot laps at 9:00 am with racing to follow.

On Tuesday evening, August 14, a special evening of IMCA racing occurs with the three major IMCA traveling series competing. Drivers in the IMCA National Modified Series will chase a $5,000 purse. The Derry Brothers Summer Series for IMCA late models will compete as well as the Midwest Motorsports IMCA stock cars. Hot laps at 5:30 followed by racing.
