IMCA Series Wins to Kosiski, Logue, and Jackson

by David Wilkinson

(Des Moines, Iowa) (August 14, 2001) All three IMCA traveling series raced Tuesday night in front of a nearly full grandstand as part of the Iowa State Fair in one of the most competitive nights of the year. In every class, the eventual winner of the feature, led early in the race, lost the lead, and regained it for the victory. Joe Kosiski won the late model event and Steve Jackson won the stock car main. John Logue made it a state fair sweep by winning the modified feature after winning a non-sanctioned mod race Saturday at the fair. Cliff Barber was the dwarf car winner.

The thirty-five lap Deery Brothers Summer Series for IMCA late models saw the lead change five times between Joe Kosiski and Jeff Aikey. National late model competitor Billy Moyer was running in sixth place on the fourth lap when his car burst into flames. Moyer got out safely. As the lead seesawed back and forth between Kosiski and Aikey, in the end it was Kosiski winning as Aikey ran side-by-side during much of the last two laps. Finishing in third was Chris Smyser with Ray Guss Jr. fourth.

In the IMCA National Modified Series race, John Logue jumped into the lead from the pole position and led until Jim Lynch took the high side around the track while Logue stayed low on lap eight. Lynch led until six laps later, when Logue made the low groove work on a restart and he regained the lead. On lap 20, Lynch the rear end on his car went out. Logue held onto the lead for the last five laps of the race to finish a car length ahead of Mark Elliott with Denny Stoneburner third and Joe McBirnie fourth. After the race, Rex Parkison claimed Elliott’s engine and Scott Olson claimed Logue’s.

Greg Shepherd took the early lead in the feature for the Midwest Motorsports Best of the Midwest Series for IMCA stock cars. On lap three Steve Jackson, who started on the fourth row, moved to the front followed by Mark Elliott, Tim Baker, and Jeremy Christians. On lap eight, Elliott tapped Jackson in turn three and passed him for the lead. On lap 15, one of Elliott’s tires went down and Jackson regained the lead and pulled away from the field for an easy win in the 25-lap race. Jeff Anderson finished second with Christians third and Baker fourth.

On the second lap of the dwarf car feature, three cars crossed the starting lap side-by-side with Fred Schimmels barely in the lead with Todd Shute and Cliff Barber by his side. Barber had the lead on the next lap. On lap eight Randy Bryan caught Barber by running the high side and took the lead. On a restart for the tenth lap, Barber made a great move and was in front again, with Bryan right behind him. The finish was Barber, Bryan, Bob Thomas, and Schimmels.
