MATHEW DONALD DOUBLES AT IOWA STATE FAIR SPEEDWAY

by DAVID WILKINSON

Des Moines, Iowa – A crowded grandstand at the Iowa State Fair Speedway Friday was treated to an exciting evening as ten features were run, six from the regular program and four make-ups. It was a great night for Mathew Donald who won both IMCA modified features. Multiple season winners include: Jeff Johnson who won his sixth Karl Chevrolet NDTR truck feature, Rick Gladson (five victories) and Bill Bonnet (three victories) in IMCA hobby stocks. Other hobby stock wins went to Larry Embrey and Randy Casner. Darrell DeFrance won the IMCA late model main, Jesse Vander Wal took the IMCA stock car race, and Mike Morrill won the dwarf car race.

Mathew Donald started from the front and made the best of it in the two IMCA modified features. In the make-up feature, the race resumed with four laps down after being stopped for rain last week with Donald in front. He was able to hold off Eric Lundstrum for the win with Lundstrum second, Russ Gladson third, and Tim Nelson in fourth. The lineup for regular feature was based on the previous point average, thus allowing Donald to receive a front row starting spot for the feature. Donald let wire-to-wire for the win with Tom Killen second, Dave Farren third, and Danny Wallace in fourth.

The make-up IMCA late model feature had two leaders, unfortunately for David Stanton led the first half while Chris Smyser led the second half and took the checkered first. Stanton did finish second with Les Verly third and Todd Cooney fourth. In the regular IMCA late model feature, Darrell DeFrance, after working through the field, passed Randy Faux on the 15th lap of the 18-lap feature for the win. Faux finished second with Cooney third and Smyser fourth.

In the IMCA stock car main, Jesse VanderWal picked up his first win at the speedway by leading all 15 laps from his front row starting position. Rick Warden finished second with Don Killen third and Dennis Kimmel in fourth.

Jeff Johnson bested Steve Philipsen in a feature duel between the two Karl Chevrolet NDTR trucks with Rod Sorter following in third and Lou Sipolt in fourth.

The first IMCA hobby stock make-up feature had several leaders with Gene Behle and Bruce Wolfe fighting in the first half of the race, but it was all Larry Embrey in the second half of the race. Embrey won followed by Behle, Justin Maschke, and Mike Thomas. In the second make-up, Jason Murray led the first nine laps until Rick Gladson passed him on the final lap. The finishing order was Gladson, Murray, Eric Stanton, and Steve Curtis.

Bill Bonnett passed John Davis on lap two and led the rest of the first regular hobby stock feature. In second was Gladson with Mike Stark in third and John Gilbert fourth. Stark was lucky on the last lap as the race ended under a yellow-checkered because of debris on the track. Just after the flag was thrown, a wheel went flying from his car. In the second regular hobby main, Randy Casner led the entire race from his front row starting spot. Following him to the finish were Jason Murray, Frank Grove, and Rusty Groves. After the race, Mark Chance claimed Casner’s engine.

Randy Bryan led the first half of the dwarf car feature until passed by Cliff Barber. But on the last lap, Mike Morrill passed Barber for the win with Barber second, Bryan third, and Fred Schimmels fourth.

Racing continues in all classes next Friday as the 360 sprint cars return with hot laps at 6:00 followed by racing.
