HISTORY AT THE IOWA STATE FAIR SPEEDWAY: BAGBY WINS

Des Moines, Iowa (July 14,2000) - Friday was another historic night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway as John Bagby won the IMCA late model feature. To best of everyone’s memory, Bagby became the first African-American to win a feature at the track. Bagby started on the pole, jumped into the lead, drove a solid race and led all 18 laps. Darrell DeFrance finished second after trying hard to pass Bagby. Todd Cooney was third and David Stanton fourth.

In the IMCA modified feature, Dave Farren started seventh and drove his car into the first turn like a stealth fighter. After the first lap he was second to John Yaw Sr. and was in the lead by the second lap. Danny Wallace chased Farren, but was unable to pass him and had to settle for second. Bill Davis Jr. was third and Tom Killen finished fourth.

Matt Moro topped Tom St. Arnold, Doran Doty and Larry Pinegar for the 360-sprint feature.

Jeff Johnson won his eighth Karl Chevrolet NDTR truck feature of the season. Finishing behind were Steve Philipsen, Mark /fee, and Brett Moyer.

In the IMCA stock car feature, Danny Hill passed Dennis Kimmell on lap six and was in the lead to take the checkered first at lap fifteen. Steve Jackson moved steadily through the field, passed Marshall Allen for second on lap thirteen, but did not have enough for Hill. Allen finished third, improving on his fourth place finish last week, and Kimmel was fourth.

Rick Gladson won his seventh IMCA hobby stock feature of the year. The two other hobby features went to John Davis and Don Wear.

Next Friday is the last night of regular racing at the speedway with hot laps at 6:00. Season Championships will be held the following Friday.
