IOWA FAIR SPECIAL: Logue and Elliot
Gladson, Vote, Schaffar, and Johnson

Des Moines, Iowa – The Iowa State Fair held the first racing program of the Fair Saturday morning on a hot day that resulted in a dry-slick, dusty track. Over 150 cars were pitted in the infield. John Logue won the modified feature with Mark Elliott capturing the stock car main. Rick Gladson, Jared Vote and Terry Schaffar won the three hobby stock features and the Karl Chevrolet NDTR truck race went to Jeff Johnson.
In the modified feature, Rick Gustin passed Justin Boney on lap two for the lead. Five laps later, John Logue passed Gustin, then bobbled allowing Gustin past him again. Logue took the lead on the next lap and held on for the feature win. Gustin was second, Todd Cooney third, and Kendall Sather, who started 21st, finished fourth. By the time of this feature, turn one was so dusty (the huge grandstand blocked the southerly breeze) that the back markers "tip-toed" their way into the turn.
Maynard Davis led the first lap of the stock car feature, and then spun out giving the lead to Rick Brown. Brown pulled away from the field with Mark Elliott chasing him. On lap 12, Brown approached the trailing car of Bill Hoover. Brown got caught behind Hoover and Elliott squeezed past them for the lead. Elliott led to the checkered followed by Troy Trover, Brown, and Bert McDaniel, Eldon.
In the first hobby stock feature, Rick Gladson made great use of his pole position draw as he led all fifteen laps of the race. This was his ninth win of the year at the track. Jeff Griffiths finished second with Tim Gebel in third and Ken Bidwell in fourth.
Dave Johnson led the first half of the second hobby stock feature and Jared Vote led the second half to reach the checkered first. Justin Maschke, who started 21st and then moved through the field to finish second. Jeff Hovick was third and Johnson was fourth.
Terry Shaffar led the entire third hobby stock feature for the win. Donovan Smith was second, Chris Jensen third, and John Thoren fourth.
In the Karl Chevrolet NDTR feature, Steve Philipsen took the early lead from his front row start. On lap three, Sean Allen passed him for the lead. But the exciting move came when Jeff Johnson passed Allen on the last lap for the victory. Allen finished second, Philipsen third, and Mark Fee was fourth. This was Johnson’s eleventh victory at the fairgrounds.
