Takes Late Model Feature at Iowa State Fair Speedway

Des Moines, Iowa – The start of the IMCA late model racing season at the Iowa State Fair Speedway went to Rob Toland Friday night as 21 late models roared around the track. Other winners included Tony Norem in his 360 sprint car, Danny Wallace in the IMCA modified feature, Greg Shepherd in the IMCA stock car race, and Rick Gladson in the IMCA hobby stock feature. A second hobby stock feature and the DIRT truck race will be run next Friday at 6:30 PM. A city curfew prohibited the running of these races.
In the IMCA late model feature, Ron Cochran made good use of his draw of a front row starting position as he jumped into the lead. On the 16th lap of the 18-lap feature, Rob Toland passed him. Cochran finished second followed by Darrell DeFrance and Todd Cooney.
The first half of the 360-sprint car feature belonged to Ryan Anderson while the second half of the race belonged to Tony Norem. Norem worked his way to the front and was the first to receive the checkered flag. Finishing in second was Tim St. Arnold with Doran Doty third and Anderson fourth. Ron Wignall was involved in a crash and transported to a local hospital for treatment.
In the IMCA modified, Danny Wallace moved from his 11th place starting position to pass Tom Killen for the lead. He led the race and held off the challenge of John Logue for the victory. Mark Allgood finished third behind Logue with Greg Cox fourth.
Greg Shepherd jumped his IMCA stock car into the lead of the feature and led all 15 laps for the victory. Following him to the finish line were Skeeter Paris, David Cirksena, and Steve Jackson. After the race, Mike Todd claimed engine of Paris.
Rick Gladson passed leader Shawn Essex to win the only IMCA hobby stock feature of the evening. Steve Curtis finished second, Essex third, and Mark Chance was fourth.
Racing continues next Friday with hot laps at 6:00 p.m. followed at 6:30 with the second hobby stock feature and truck feature from this program and then the full race card.
